While
Tom
Nolan was researching his biography of Macdonald, he unearthed 3 unpublished
private eye stories. Doug Greene, of Crippen & Landru Publishers, issued
them in 2001 as Strangers in Town: Three Newly Discovered Mysteries by Ross
Macdonald (cover by Deborah Miller). 2 stories featured Lew Archer, and
the third,
a detective-narrator named Joe Rogers. "Find
the Woman" (original
title, "Death by Air") from
The Name is Archer, originally featured Rogers and was changed to Archer
for the 1955 collection. Rogers, from "Death by Water" in the 2001
collection, would eventually be changed to Archer in 2007. This cover is also
on the bulletin board.
